Description

This unique woven pot in earthy, natural tones was handwoven from palm tree leaf, foraged creeper vines and twigs in rural Zambia. Use yours for your favourite houseplant or for storing jewellery – or simply display on a shelf or sideboard.

When the Kariba Dam - a manmade dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe – was built in the 1970’s, many people were displaced. The government and other parties set about to support these displaced people by training people in traditional and profitable crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork.

The groups who create these decorative woven baskets are supported by such organisations, ensuring that they have the materials and the ongoing training to produce these woven pots as well as ensuring that fair prices are paid. Basket weaving is a way of life in these communities; there is even a club at the local school dedicated to teaching youngsters this vital skill. You can meet the Zambian weavers here.
