AMANTIN: Baby Changing Basket with Leather Handles
We’re delighted to announce the arrival of AMANTIN - our beautiful handwoven baby changing basket, ethically and carefully produced by our partner co-operative in Northern Ghana.
Choose to accessorise your basket with an array of essentials for your newborns ultimate comfort. Combine a foam mattress and cotton sheet or choose to upgrade to a natural coconut coir and wool mattress (made from hundreds of coconut fibres and recommended for newborn babies) and organic cotton sheet. Or make a statement and buy the basket alone to feature as a gorgeous tabletop tray! AMANTIN features soft goat’s leather-bound carry handles.
These ethical nursery accessories make the perfect eco baby gift and will transform any chest of drawers or floor space into a stylish changing area for your little one. Once the days of nappy changing are behind you, this flat woven basket can be put to use all over the home and nursery – a truly practical keepsake.
The majority of the weavers who produce these baby baskets are men, having been taught the age-old art of basket weaving from their own mothers and fathers. Agricultural work is the mainstay of most weavers’ family incomes, but poor rainfall and drought makes life extremely challenging. Basket weaving, and producing these exquisite woven baskets, brings women and men the opportunity to earn a valuable second income.
Each changing basket takes around three days to weave, using a grass called veta vera which grows wild in Ghana and is remarkably sturdy when woven. Not only is the main material sustainable, but the goat’s leather binding on the change basket’s handles comes as a by-product of the food industry.

FAIR TRADE & HANDMADE IN GHANA
The weavers are our life force - the sheer spirit of THE BASKET ROOM and the raw talent behind every fair trade basket we sell. Every woven basket has been worked on exclusively by one weaver, and each basket is their very own work of art before it becomes yours. Woven meticulously over a number of days, your basket has accompanied its creator on their daily errands from home to field to farm, enabling the weavers to earn a precious second income without having to give up their other jobs and responsibilities.
We’ve searched far and wide to partner up with the most remarkable artisans and networks of weaving cooperatives in Africa. We’re proud and privileged to regularly spend time with them all - getting to know the people, the raw materials and the harvesting, dyeing and weaving processes, first-hand.
The weavers take centre stage. These are their stories. Listen and share.
