With its bold stripes of hot pink and contrasting sage green base, KIJITI is a basket bag for all seasons. Perfect for taking to the gym, the market, festivals or the beach, this pastel-coloured tote was woven by a member of a family-run weaving group in the Eastern Region of Kenya.

Weaving each basket bag can take up to six days: this is work that fits in conveniently with weavers’ other domestic chores, childcare and farming. These yarn and sisal bags are then sent to a Nairobi-based leatherworks we work extensively with, where cow hide shoulder straps are produced and attached by skilled, female leatherworkers.

Basket weaving is a craft that connects generations in Kenya, passed from grandmothers to mothers to daughters all over the country. In producing these woven totes, the women in this craft group are empowered to support their families with a reliable additional income – and work that is fair, creative, sociable and flexible.

Not wool

Good prompt delivery , but returned basket as I was sad the ‘yarn’ was polyester. It did say on the website description that the yarn was synthetic but I missed it. I’d assumed it was dyed sisal. If it had at least been recycled wool I may have kept it. I may reorder another style that’s all natural materials once I’ve been refunded.

The Basket Room

We're sorry you weren't completely happy with your purchase. At present polyester is used in only 1.2% of our baskets and we have committed to entirely phasing out the use of virgin polyester by 2024. You can find out more about this in our sustainability report here: https://www.thebasketroom.com/pages/sustainability-ethics
