Bring a little tranquillity to the home with this scandi style collection of woven baskets, whose name – SHWARI – means calm. These lovely striped baskets in sand and white are naturally dyed using Kenyan soil, and hand woven from sisal. Produced by a member of a small but flourishing women’s weaving cooperative, these storage baskets come in five handy sizes which means there’s one for every corner of the home: think desk tidies, planters and flower pots to laundry baskets, large planters and nursery storage. Need more inspiration? Check out our basket uses page HERE.
The women behind our baskets have woven from a young age: this meticulous, age-old craft is passed along the female line, from grandmothers to mothers to daughters. Once upon a time the weavers would travel to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets in a broad range of designs, but The Basket Room now provides this cooperative with regular and fairly-paid orders, and the group continues to thrive and grow. Sisal grass is usually purchased in ready-rolled batches when the cooperative receives our orders, which is hand-dyed in large vats before weaving begins.
Following all the key principles of fair trade, working with cooperatives in Africa empowers women to earn a flexible income in the dry seasons, where subsistence farming can fail to meet the needs of the family. Buy one of our woven baskets and you actively support these weavers’ livelihoods, and our commitment to fair trade. Each beautifully woven basket is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative, and you can meet these weavers right HERE.
