International Women’s Day Monday 8th March 2021 #ChooseToChallenge
International Women’s Day (March 8th) is only a month away so here is our film we have made about Dorcas Ndinda, the chairlady of one of the basket weaving groups we work closely with in Kenya. She’s a remarkable woman who juggles work as a market trader, a farmer, and chairlady.
Since International Women’s Day’s aim this year is to empower people to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity - and celebrate women’s stories - we are releasing a film we made recently that explores Madam Dorcas’ work as a market trader.

This two-minute film shares a day-in-the-life of Madam Dorcas as she arrives at her local market by bicycle, carrying vegetables to sell at her stall in a woven basket produced by the weaving group she chairs in her home village.

Images evoke the hustle and bustle of market day interspersed with interviews with Dorcas who weaves as she speaks of the complex pressures of market trading as well as the opportunities basket weaving has brought her.
